Anthurium warocqueanum 'Esmeraldas' is an even rarer and more spectacular variety of Anthurium warocqueanum. Known for its long, narrow leaves and pronounced silvery veins, this houseplant brings a touch of elegance and refinement to any space. The leaves, often more elongated and thinner than those of the type species, are distinguished by their velvety texture and intense dark green hue, making this plant a true gem for collectors.
Origin: Like Anthurium warocqueanum, this variety is native to the rainforests of Colombia, but the 'Esmeraldas' selection is often associated with a specific region that gives it its name. It grows in humid conditions, as an epiphyte, clinging to tree trunks where it benefits from filtered light.
Growth: Anthurium warocqueanum 'Esmeraldas' is slow growing indoors, but can produce very long leaves, sometimes exceeding 1 meter in good conditions. These leaves are even narrower and longer than those of the type species, with more pronounced veins, providing a spectacular contrast against the dark green, velvety background of the leaves.
Flowers: The flowers of this variety, although present, are inconspicuous and consist of green spathes accompanied by spadices, similar to those of the type species. However, the main interest of this plant lies in its remarkable leaves rather than in its flowering.
Light: As with the type species, Anthurium warocqueanum 'Esmeraldas' prefers bright but indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can damage its delicate leaves, while too little light will slow its growth and reduce leaf size. Place the plant in a well-lit spot, but away from direct sunlight.
Watering: This variety requires regular watering, ensuring that the substrate remains slightly moist but not soggy. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency while maintaining a humid environment.
Substrate: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter, such as a tropical mix with perlite and pine bark. This type of substrate allows for good drainage while retaining some moisture.
Toxicity: Anthurium warocqueanum 'Esmeraldas' is toxic if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause severe mouth and throat irritation, as well as abdominal pain. It is advisable to handle this plant with care and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
